Show Me the Way to Go Home: An Empirical Investigation of Ride-Sharing and Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Fatalities
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work, we investigate how the entry of ride-sharing services influences the rate of alcohol related motor vehicle fatalities. While significant debate has surrounded ride-sharing, limited empirical work has been devoted to uncovering the societal benefits of such services (or the mechanisms which drive these benefits). Using a difference in difference approach to exploit a natural experiment, the entry of Uber Black and Uber X into California markets between 2009 and 2014, we find a significant drop in the rate of fatalities after the introduction of Uber X. Further, results suggest that not all services have the same effect, insofar as the effect of the Uber Black car service is intermittent and manifests only in selective locations (i.e., large cities). These results underscore the importance of coupling increased availability with cost savings in order to exploit the public welfare gains offered by the sharing economy. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed within.

In this work, we investigate how the entry of the driving service Uber influences the rate of alcohol related motor vehicle homicides. While significant debate has surrounded the entry of driving services like Uber and Lyft, limited rigorous empirical work has been devoted to uncovering the social benefits of such services (or the mechanism which drives these benefits). متن کاملSolving the Ride-Sharing Problem with Non-Homogeneous Vehicles by Using an Improved Genetic Algorithm with Innovative Mutation Operators and Local Search Methods
An increase in the number of vehicles in cities leads to several problems, including air pollution, noise pollution, and congestion. To overcome these problems, we need to use new urban management methods, such as using intelligent transportation systems like ride-sharing systems. The purpose of this study is to create and implement an improved genetic algorithms model for ride-sharing with non...

This paper investigates the role of race/ethnicity, language skills (a proxy for acculturation among Hispanics in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas), income, and education level on alcohol-related fatal motor vehicle crashes. Using the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), we confirmed previous state-based studies showing that high income and education levels have a protective inf...

OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the contributions of rural residence, alcohol use, and pedestrian fatalities to the high American Indian motor-vehicle crash mortality rate in Arizona. METHODS Records from the Fatal Accident Reporting System were used to examine mortality rates between 1979 and 1988. RESULTS American Indians had increased relative risks in all motor-vehicle crash categories ...
